Boundaries? What boundaries? If you’re the type of family that just loves getting out and about, then look no further, as the 3-wheeler pushchair is for you. The single front wheel makes this design ideal if you are keen to introduce your child to the outdoorsy lifestyle early in their development, or simply want to manoeuvre around city streets more easily.
A model for everybody Faced with the sheer range of models available today, it’s hard to believe that the elongated design of the 3-wheeler pushchair only really became mainstream around 2012, though it was invented in 2005.
When looking more closely at the wide range available, you will see that a key differentiating factor is wheel size. Wheels can range in size from the standard-size pushchair wheel, right up to oversized wheels, which give a smoother ride. If you want to jog with the pushchair, look for air-filled tyres, which can be pumped up, as opposed to the traditional hard wheels (be prepared to repair a puncture however!). Models designed especially for running or jogging come with built-in suspension and mudguards to prevent splashback.
You’ll get as much flexibility and choice with 3-wheelers as you will with regular strollers, such as a choice of seat types (including cot and car seat), two-way facing seat, full recline, storage and so on so, depending on your budget of course, you don’t have to sacrifice any functionality for the streamlined design.
Why are 3-wheelers so suited to active lifestyles? For a start that single front wheel allows for excellent manoeuvrability making mounting and dismounting pavements, entering and exiting through tight doorways, navigating tight shopping aisles, or walking on rough, uneven terrain, much easier. They are often easy to push and steer one handed.
Things to look for • Newborn. Not all 3-wheelers are suitable from birth without an additional carrycot or car seat. • Colour and fabric. While there is a vast array of colours available, don’t just choose the first one you like. How will that vibrant yellow fare after a day of trekking through the countryside? Make sure the fabric is waterproof and wipe clean! Even better look for a seat cover that will zip out. • Storage. 3-wheelers can be bulkier to store but some have a front-wheel release function, which might make the difference between fitting it into your car boot or not.
